When we go outside we see that there are trees, grass, bugs, clouds, the sun, etc.  Why do these things exist?  Suppose for a minute that nothing existed.  Would nothingness require an explanation?  Certainly not!  But the split second that something exists, there has to be a reason, an explanation.

When we observe the things existing around us, we discover it all appears to be dependent on something else for its existence.  Trees and grass need carbon dioxide that the animals produce.  Animals need oxygen the trees and grass produce.  Animals need plants for food.  The plants use the animal wastes and ultimately the animal bodies for food.  Man needs both animals and vegetation and we all need the sun and the rain.

The ultimate cause or reason for all these contingencies has to be outside the circle-it has to be something or someone else that’s not contingent on anything.  It has to be something or someone else that is utterly independent, completely self-caused and self-reliant and that comes close to a working definition of God.
