To answer that question in just one sentence: a Christian is a disciple (that is, a follower) of Jesus Christ. What exactly is a follower of Christ? It simply means you have a personal relationship with Christ, by accepting Him as your personal Lord and Savior. Simply believing in God is not enough. Being a good person is not enough. Nor is going to church, being baptized or taking communion, although all of those things are done by Christians.
When you trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, several things begin to take place in your life. Something happens within you -- you become a new creation in Christ. And something happens to you --you are automatically and instantly placed into the family of God.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
